Frequently Asked Questions
Live Register e-Registration
Are Fingerprints stored?
No, fingerprints are not stored and cannot be reproduced or printed out as images. Once scanned, the fingerprint is translated into a unique numerical value and it is these that are matched.
How secure is Live Register in storing sensitive student data?
All student data is stored on a SQL server in the school and connected to the school's local area network. It can therefore only be accessed by users within the school with appropriate access privileges. As a result data is kept safe to the same level as that of student data in the MIS system.
Is registration data sent back to the school's management information system?
Live Register is currently capable of writing back registration data to the following management information systems: SIMS .net, Serco Facility, Pearson Phoenix e¹ and iSAMS.
Is Live Register™ easy to set up?
Yes, once the technical installation is complete (typically this may take one or two days) then a short briefing to staff enables them to quickly understand how to use the system. Student records are then set up with a one-time scan of their thumbprint (which is converted to a numeric value and not stored as an image).
How long does the enrolment process take?
Enrolment simply needs the student to place their thumb twice on the scanner for approximately 2-3 seconds each time.
Can I use this system without using my fingerprint?
Yes. Students can be issued PIN numbers to enter on the Terminals. However, this is not encouraged as biometric verification is far more secure.
How many Terminals are required?
This depends on two main factors. Firstly, number of students using the system and secondly the arrangement of the school buildings. We will advise on the optimum number of Terminals which are normally positioned in one or more pairs at strategic entry points.
Can emergency attendance reports be printed automatically when a fire alarm sounds?
With Live Register's Emergency Print Assistant, Live Register can be connected directly to the alarm system and automatically print a report when an alarm sounds. This report will show a to-the-minute view of who should be in school.
How durable is the hardware?
Terminals are made with heavy duty, robust casings, along with a tamper-proof keypad and high quality optical fingerprint sensor that are built to withstand rigorous everyday use. The backlit LCD panel is protected by toughened perspex.
